Who are we?
PORTO FOZ VELHA 4 FLATS is a complex of three apartments with an amazing number of resources to offer, from the generosity of its space to rich sun exposure, easy access and a creative decoration, all in favour of the requisites of a stay, either for business or pleasure, either if you look for some quietness or you are a visiting scholar or researcher.
Where are we?
PORTO FOZ VELHA 4 FLATS was built in a part of city of Oporto born in the Middle Ages and unique due to its historical origins, geographical characteristics and social fabric. Worldliness, quality of everyday life, beauty of the environment are here intertwined in a really urban profile with its public transport, its nearby historical centre(s) and the vividness of its streets.
«Foz» means the point where a river meets the ocean, in this case the river Douro and the Atlantic. It is also the very last fishermen's village to be absorbed by the growth of the neighbouring town and it became, on the verge of the 20th century, the favourite place for the moneyed bourgeoisie from the north of the country, during summer.
Today, Foz displays a charming blend of seaside town and popular neighbourhoods, pleasant promenades and small beaches with very good restaurants, bistros and calm coffeehouses. «Foz Velha», the oldest part, shows, in its narrow streets covered with stone, harmonious rows of humble dwellings, but also the proud façades with wrought ironed balconies and art-déco decorative details. There is an offer of various leisure activities, such as public swimming-pools, jogging itineraries through public gardens and parks, cycling by the river, tennis courts, bodyboard, etc. Not far from Foz, the monumental and cultural treasures of Oporto, as well as the harbour of Leixões, with its countless fish and seafood restaurants, its typical market and the liveliness characteristic of any port.
What are we?
PORTO FOZ VELHA 4 FLATS named each of its three apartments after three labels identifying port wine — vintage, tawny, ruby — as a tribute to this major symbol of the region.
VINTAGE - Vintage Port is seen by its producers as a miracle of nature, for it proceeds from exceptional, unpredictable crops, therefore being cared with particular love throughout the evolution and aging processes so that it becomes the most sublime of port wines.
TAWNY - Tawny Port ages in oak casks during several years, and there it gets that amber-gold, tawny colour.
RUBY - Ruby Port stays during a few years in wooden casks and is characterized by its freshness, fruity aroma and ruby colour.
Once in Oporto you should not miss the Port Wine Cellars (Caves de Vinho do Porto), and of course, take a boat trip up the Douro River. Other recommended sights are Serralves (the Oporto's Contemporary Art Museum) and his romantic and bucolic surrounding parks, the famous Palácio da Bolsa, and the whole area of the medieval downtown. Ribeira is worth all visits, with its old docks and houses along the river bank. It will take your breath away. In the downtown area take a visit to the S. Francisco Church, the very old Clérigos Tower, the city' ex-libris tower whose staircase with 140 steps can provide you one of the most beautiful urban panoramic views. Visit also Livraria Lello, a wonderfull Art Nouveau bookshop, Mercado do Bolhão, Igreja do Carmo, Rectory of Oporto's University... These are places with a very rich and interesting history.
For kids, there is a new Sea Life Centre; many play places directly on the Foz beaches, a surf school, and exciting trips in old trams. You can also find a tram museum at Massarelos, full of activities for children). For mamily activities you will find plenty of child-friendly parks, including the enormous City Park (Parque da Cidade), and the old Palácio Cristal, with its outstanding views over the river.
Portuguese restaurants are very family friendly and eating out with children is remarkably stress free.
